Quick, off-topic story: During my early years as an Assistant Slave at
the Texas Highway Department, I was talking to one of the crusty
veterans, who was trying to intimidate me by telling me a story of the
last headquarters young'un he'd had to "train". The way he told it,
the young construction inspector in question challenged a contractor
because he did not install a culvert under a driveway on a rural
highway.
"But the the driveway is on the top of the hill, and the drainage runs
away from it in both directions," complained the contractor. But the
new inspector stuck to his guns.
On the next trip to the site, the inspector was accompanied by our
storyteller. He observed that the contractor's driveway construction
now clearly showed culvert emerging from under it. The young inspector
seemed pleased. But the grizzled veteran looked at the contractor, and
said, "Betcha a hundred bucks I can't throw a rock down the length of
that culvert."
"No bet!" replied the contractor.
Of course, the contractor had just stuck two pieces of culvert pipe
into the dirt on either side of the driveway.
